Pioneer pharmacist wins national award

The first pharmacist to become a credentialed diabetes educator (CDE) in Australia has turned out to be one of the best in the country.

Kirrily Chambers has been named the joint winner of the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year Award, after being named South Australia’s winner last month.

The pharmacist shares the title with Ann Morris, who is Victoria’s CDE of the Year.

Ms Chambers was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 10, and found her experience with the health system was “not always the easiest”.

So it was an obvious choice for her to become an educator.

“One of the biggest stumbling blocks early in my diagnosis was being able to find easy access to education,” she says.

She became a credentialed educator in 2009 and sees patients in a pharmacy clinic during the week, working as a pharmacist
