Plan for new breast implant register

Plastic surgeons are developing a new register to monitor breast implants in Australia, in light of the global health scare over the rupture rate and health risks of a French-made device.

The new opt-out register will distinguish between different types of devices, which has not been done in the past, and will capture greater numbers of implants including those used in both cosmetic and reconstruction surgeries.

The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, which is setting up the new register, has run a breast implant registry since 1998.
