Plastic surgeon disputes 'soft porn' social media claims

Body anxiety issues predate Instagram and Kylie Jenner, she writes in open letter

A plastic surgeon has hit back over claims that some in her profession have fuelled the rise of body image anxiety, in part by using “soft porn images" on their social media platforms.

At a three-day cosmetic surgery conference in Sydney recently, the Breast Masters Symposium, UK Professor Emerita Nichola Rumsey delivered a rebuke to surgeons who use social media to promote their practices

Professor Rumsey said some were using “soft porn images” on Instagram and other sites that “give patients unrealistic expectations of the likely outcomes [and] contribute to negative body image, and it should change,” according to a Fairfax report.

But Perth plastic surgeon Dr Anh Nguyen, in an open letter responding to Professor Rumsey’s comments, said while body image anxieties were a ”real concern”, they had been around a lot longer than social media.
