PM meets with pharma industry over PBS listing

THE federal government may be poised to overturn its decision to defer listing new Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC)-endorsed drugs on the PBS following a crucial meeting between Prime Minister Julia Gillard and industry leaders.

The meeting, also attended by Medicines Australia (MA) chair Will Delaat, Generic Medicine Industry Australia president Dr Martin Cross and Consumers Health Forum CEO Carol Bennett, was held earlier this month,  following months of souring relations between the government and industry.

The government’s decision in February to require Cabinet approval of all new PBS listings has attracted strong criticism, with MA claiming the move has resulted in patients not being able to afford some medications.

Ms Gillard is understood to have agreed to a 30 September deadline to resolve the issue.
