Post-mortem sperm a sticky problem

Harvesting a dead man’s sperm can be fraught with difficulty with doctors left to navigate myriad inconsistencies in the legal process.

While the procedure itself is relatively straightforward, different laws in different states means post-mortem sperm retrieval can be a legal minefield with many IVF specialists left scratching their heads over their legal and ethical obligations.

The situation is now so convoluted across the country, according to one medical law expert, that those involved are almost guaranteed of enduring a “long, complex and emotionally draining process”.
