PPIs linked to increased dementia risk
The use of proton pump inhibitors is associated with increased risk of dementia, according to results from a seven-year study including almost 74,000 elderly people.
Regular users of PPIs have a 44% higher risk of dementia than those not on the medication, the research shows.
Similar effect risk was measured for omeprazole, pantoprazole and esomeprazole, with slightly more pronounced risk with esomeprazole.
The possible underlying cause is yet to be determined, say the researchers from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases.
