Practical resource on addiction medicine
A POPULAR resource for GPs working with drug-dependent patients and families dealing with addiction has been revised.
The DVD, written and presented by addiction medicine expert Dr Frank McLeod, is targeted at families and friends of heroin users considering or about to undergo opioid replacement therapy.
The DVD covers a range of issues associated with the therapy, such as the medications prescribed, practical measures to manage side-effects and advice for family members supporting a loved one through the process.
Pressure from family members to get off methadone programs too soon often leads to relapse and failed treatment programs, he notes.
“Many people continue to have very strong views but little knowledge of this area of medicine,” he says.
