Premature birth ‘hikes asthma risk’

A meta-analysis and review of 30 studies involving approximately 1.5 million children has suggested that the link between preterm birth, wheezing conditions and asthma, is higher than previously thought.

The research showed that average asthma rates rose to 14% in babies born at 37 weeks.

Those born before 37 weeks were almost 50% more likely to develop asthma than full-term babies, and babies born before 32 weeks were at three times higher risk.
