Prevention at the core of quality primary care

We know countries with a strong primary healthcare system with prevention at its core have better health outcomes, for patients and their communities.

Keeping people out of hospital care makes sense from an individual perspective while being economically sound, as the cost of just one admission to a public hospital equals more than 15 years’ worth of GP consultations.

It is important to note that dedicated expenditure on prevention in general practice still only represents less than 2% of MBS costs, although since 1 May 2010, MBS changes have ensured GPs are better supported in this area.
