PSA testing not a life saver: NHMRC

PSA testing has "no discernible effect" on a man's risk of dying but confers a very real risk of over-diagnosis and unnecessary treatment, Australia's peak research body says.

In long-awaited draft guidance to doctors, described as the "best possible advice" to date, the NHMRC states that PSA testing in asymptomatic men can detect prostate cancers earlier, but the potential harms may outweigh any benefits.
