PSR appoints Bill Coote as permanent director

Health Minister Nicola Roxon announced the appointment last week and said she was pleased Dr Coote had accepted the appointment and looked forward to working with him.

Dr Coote said the PSR had faced some challenges recently, including a Senate inquiry and an ongoing court case, which is considering the validity of some PSR committee
appointments over the past five years.

“The Senate report recognised there were some issues to be addressed. Importantly the Senate committee endorsed peer review as the underlying principle of PSR,” Dr Coote
said.

Meanwhile, media coverage suggesting the Senate report had called for legislative changes allowing the merger of PBS and MBS claims data has been refuted by committee
chair Greens senator Rachel Siewert.

“There is no way any of us would have signed on to something like that,” she told MO.
