Pumping iron cuts diabetes risk

Lifting weights for as little as an hour a week can dramatically lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a study of health professionals finds.

Even among men doing no other exercise, those who regularly pumped iron had a 48% lower risk of developing diabetes during an 18-year follow-up period compared with those not lifting any weights.

The study, involving 32,000 middle-aged men from the US-based Health Professionals Follow-up Study, is one of the largest yet to separate the effects of weight training
