Push for MBS items to cover pulmonary rehab

New MBS items are being sought to allow GPs to refer patients with chronic lung disease for an eight-week course of pulmonary rehabilitation.

The proposal being considered by the Medicare Services Advisory Committee will apply to community-based, physiotherapist-supervised group sessions for patients with COPD, interstitial lung disease or bronchiectasis.

The application by the Lung Foundation Australia states that about 820,000 Australians have chronic lung disease but currently only about 5-10% of them access pulmonary rehabilitation services.
