Push to wean GPs off 'teat of bulk-billing'

The AMA's alternative co-pay plan has received an icy reception from Prime Minister Tony Abbott, but the association's GP chair has defended the model saying it would allow the profession to break away from the "tyranny" of bulk-billing.

The model, made public on Thursday, called for a  $6.15 co-payment - with exemptions for concession card holders and children under 16 - and the scrapping of the proposed $5 rebate cut for general practice services.
