Qld flood GP queries dam management

A BRISBANE GP who lost her home in Queensland’s catastrophic floods earlier this year has slammed authorities’ handling of the crisis as she faces the prospect of leaving her community to start over.

Dr Felicity Heale will be one of thousands of Queensland residents watching with interest when the Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry begins public hearings into the disaster next week.

While her practice was spared, Dr Heale, a resident of the Brisbane suburb of Fig Tree Pocket, was forced into temporary accommodation when her house was submerged up to the second floor by flood waters.

She was one of 45 individuals and businesses to date that have made written submissions to the inquiry.

In her submission, Dr Heale questioned whether better management of the Wivenhoe Dam would have mitigated or prevented the disaster, which she said was likely to force her family to live in rental accommodation for at least 12 months.
