Rapid tests accurate for strep throat

Rapid antigen diagnostic tests could be used to accurately diagnose strep throat in primary care without the lengthy wait for throat culture results, an Australian study shows.

A new analysis from researchers at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, has demonstrated that the latest rapid antigen diagnostic tests were highly accurate and could be used to reduce overdiagnosis of group A streptococcal pharyngitis cases and prevent unnecessary antibiotic use.
