Red tape sees GP on verge of closure

A rural GP has become so frustrated by the red tape involved in recruiting another doctor to work at his practice that he is threatening to close down his town’s only medical centre by the end of this week.

Dr Horst Herb, who has been practising as a GP in the north-western NSW town of Dorrigo for more than a decade, said he only found out by accident last June that the Federal Department of Health no longer considered his area a District of Workforce Shortage (DWS).
