Nurses will be given powers to prescribe any medication as long as they secure the support of a ‘partner’ doctor under a radical expansion in their scope of practice pushed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

The model has already sounded alarm bells for the RACGP, which says patients would be put at risk.

In its consultation paper, the nursing board says registered nurses could write scripts for chronic disease patients as part of GP care teams or issue repeats for high-strength analgesics in aged care if the patient’s GP cannot be contacted.
