Relishing a challenge

THERE are very few medical jobs in Australia where you can honestly say you spent the day consulting patients from under a tree – but such jobs do exist and former GP registrar Dr Aileen Traves had one of them.

Originally from Canberra, as part of her registrar training, Dr Traves signed up for the Cairns Base Hospital’s paediatrics outreach program based in far north Queensland.

The program was established 15 years ago by GP Dr Richard Heazlewood.

As part of the team Dr Traves, with her supervisor Dr Heazlewood, provided care for up to 6000 children scattered across 270,000 square kilometres.
