Remote scheme becomes a success story

RVTS CEO Dr Pat Giddings said the scheme delivered support to rural doctors, removing the need to move to a larger community to access mainstream registrar training.

“The community gets to keep their doctor and the doctor receives the support they need to achieve fellowship,” he said. “It is workforce retention at its most effective.”

Each of the new registrars has been allocated a remotely located supervisor and last week phoned in for the first of 30 ‘tele-­tutorials’ scheduled this year.

The 90-minute education sessions will cover topics that lend themselves to distance learning, while practical skills are covered in five-day workshops held twice a year.

Regular clinical teaching visits are conducted to assess onsite performance.
