Rescheduling halves benzo misuse

Rescheduling alprazolam to S8 status has led to a major decline in misuse with no compensatory increase in abuse of other drugs, a NSW study reveals.

The benzodiazepine with a reputation for causing disproportionate harm when abused was rescheduled from schedule 4 to schedule 8 in February 2014.

The rescheduling was requested by drug and alcohol clinicians because of concern over increasing levels of abuse of alprazolam, particularly by injecting drug users.
