Patricia Scheetz, a 23-year-old patient with type 1 diabetes, was no stranger to abscesses. However, when an abscess on her leg refused to clear after two courses of antibiotics and she woke to see the leg almost twice the size of the other, she knew something was very wrong.

Ms Scheetz was admitted to a Sydney hospital where, after a week of induced coma, she discovered the muscle on her inner thigh had been removed to stem an MRSA infection.
