Resistant gonorrhoea an 'urgent’ threat

Australia is facing an “urgent threat” from gonorrhoea caused by an emergent pathogen resistant to most antibiotics, microbiologists warn. 

A strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae identified in a female traveller late last year showed a worrying level of resistance to the current recommended treatment of ceftriaxone — and there are no ideal alternative antibiotics available, according to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine
