Although it is the job of the Supreme Court to decide on the merits of withholding life-sustaining treatment, doctors have the final say in practice, says a professor of health law.

The courts will usually defer to the views of medical practitioners in deciding the “best interests” of the patient, says Professor Lindy Willmott, Director of the Australian Centre for Health Law Research in Brisbane.
