Restrict enemas to low-risk elderly

Sodium phosphate enemas should only be used in low-risk patients, experts are warning, following reports of deaths in elderly people receiving the treatment.

Writing in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Israeli specialists said sodium phosphate (Fleet) enemas, even in standard doses, could trigger severe metabolic disorders, with high mortality and morbidity.
