Retire the clown, say doctors in McDonald’s appeal

WITH 48 years of service, he’s had an undeniably good run, but now concerned health professionals say the time has come for Ronald McDonald to retire.

In echoes of calls to trim down Santa and put the Easter Bunny on a celery diet, more than 550 US doctors and members of health-oriented NGOs have written an open letter to the McDonald’s US CEO Jim Skinner demanding an end to using the red and yellow clown to market junk food to children.

“Our private practices, paediatric clinics and emergency rooms are filled with children suffering from conditions related to the food they eat,” the letter
