Review curbs sedative overuse in nursing homes

One in four nursing home residents are taking daily sedatives, but this can be cut by medication reviews, aged care researchers say.

An audit of 150 residential aged care facilities across Australia found that 24% of residents were taking daily benzodiazepines and 22% were taking sedating antipsychotics.

Almost half (47%) of residents had not had their sedative medication reviewed, while only 4% had their medication reduced or stopped after a review, according to the study, led by Dr Juanita Westbury
