Right to discriminate a health issue: GP

Reports last week said Prime Minister Julia Gillard had reassured the Australian Christian Lobby that religious schools and healthcare organisations could turn away prospective staff if they did not share the religious views of the organisation.

But GP and Sydney University public health lecturer Dr Kimberley Ivory said the right to discriminate was a hindrance to solving health workforce shortages, since it would stop doctors working in certain areas based on their beliefs or sexuality.

At the time of press, Dr Ivory hoped to have 500 signatures on a petition [www.communityrun.org/petitions/what-s-god-got-to-do
