Is the rise in 'toddler milk' sales a threat to breastfeeding?
A new study shows that formula milk sales for toddlers across Australia are booming. But there are concerns that the marketing is undermining the ‘breast is best’ message.
Not being able to breastfeed has always been a problem. In Shakespeare’s time, women made careers from lactation, working as wet nurses (think Blackadder’s “Nursey”).
Alternatives to wet nurses emerged in the mid-1800s when rubber nipples and glass feeding bottles were patented, but the big change in the 20th century was the rise of formula feeding.
