Row over new medical school

The AMA has hit out at a Federal Government decision to fund a new medical school in WA, claiming it will exacerbate the doctor training bottleneck.

The new Curtin University medical school, to be built in the marginal Liberal seat of Hasluck, represents a long-held dream for WA, a state facing an acute doctor shortage in which one in three doctors are IMGs.

The school would offer 60 places in 2017, rising to 110 places by 2022, and would attract $20 million in federal funding once fully operational, Prime Minister
