Running out of steam

AS THE population ages, we are witnessing an explosion in sporting injuries in older patients. Life expectancy in Australia has risen from 63 in 1930 to older than 80 today. Modern technology and modern medicine, to quote demographer Bernard Salt, “has gifted people 20 years”.

In these extra 20 years patient demands do not diminish. We regularly see runners in their 70s, tennis players in their 80s and occasionally golfers in their 90s.
