Rural classification incentive system ‘crazy stuff’

The inquiry recently heard evidence from Health Workforce QLD CEO Chris Mitchell who said the Australian Standard Geographical Classification – Remoteness Area (ASGC-RA) system was equating small towns like Dalby, population 9300, with much larger centres like Cairns, which has 150,000 residents.

“It is just crazy stuff,” he said. “It means that there is a range of payments… that are provided for [retention or relocation] that can range between several thousand dollars and $47,000 [depending on an area’s classification].”
