Rural doctors urge ML rollout
THE health sector should “get on with the job” of introducing Medicare Locals and the Government should broaden the role of nurse practitioners and overhaul the appointment of health service managers, according to National Rural Health Alliance recommendations endorsed last week.
NRHA executive director Gordon Gregory said the 31 member bodies that make up the alliance had officially endorsed MLs as a priority among a list of recommendations from the recent National Rural Health Conference.
He said the alliance would now begin lobbying State and Federal Governments.
Mr Gregory said it was essential that MLs had the money, support and guidance to achieve the goals set for them from the start.
“It has been hard and ambitious but it is certainly something well worth attempting and we want to get on with it. As long as the rurally based [MLs] are properly funded, we don’t want any more delays.”
