Rural generalists should be given access to lucrative "specialist" Medicare items for everything from mental health to anaesthesia if they develop the skills, under draft reforms drawn up by a Federal Government committee.

The National Rural Generalist Taskforce has begun shopping around its draft recommendations to create a national model for the training, professional recognition and remuneration of rural generalists.
