Rural practice evicts ML over rent stoush

Rural NSW GP Dr Paul Mara said rising costs meant his Gundagai Medical Centre could no longer justify offering free clinic space to a psychologist, dietitian and diabetic educator under various programs run by Murrumbidgee Medicare Local (MML).

“Essentially we’ve been subsidising services from the division for a number of years,” Dr Mara told MO.

“But this increase in costs and the failure of the Medicare Local to find a place within their budget to pay rent, and our costs just going up and up and up… we just made a decision that we can’t do that.”

“I don’t believe that we should be responsible for subsidising government services to that extent.”

He denied ending ML services — previously run for the GP-only division — to avoid having general practice support an organisation set up to provide broader primary healthcare services outside general practice.
