Safety of dabigatran program criticised

Emergency departments and GPs were ill equipped to handle patient bleeds resulting from the dabigatran product familiarisation program, the head of the National Prescribing Service has declared.

Dr Lynn Weekes said holes in the pharmaceutical industry’s code of conduct should be plugged to prevent a repeat of the patient safety issues generated by the widespread prescribing of the anticoagulant before it received PBS listing.

The scheme, developed by manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim, saw almost 27,000 atrial fibrillation patients prescribed dabigatran (Pradaxa) for free in just five months last year.
