Salmonella on the rise
However, local councils and the health department are routinely failing to name the responsible venues on a government register, according to the Herald Sun newspaper.
The latest statistics follow a recent salmonella outbreak at a Ballarat pizzeria that left 18 people ill and has been linked to the death of an 82-year-old man.
Other cases of severe food poisoning include 17 diners who ate Vietnamese chicken and pork rolls, 10 people who ate Eggs Benedict at a cafe, and 13 people who ate chicken parmigiana at a hotel, the Herald Sun says.
Many of the cases are linked to eggs, the newspaper said.
A health department spokesman told the newspaper the department detected outbreaks as quickly as it could and it did not routinely reveal the names of businesses because its role was to identify and remove the source and investigate the cause.
