Scarlet fever makes a comeback

It has not yet had made it to Australia, but infectious disease experts say the re-emergence of scarlet fever in the UK and in Asia is “deeply concerning”.

Penicillin continues to provide the best treatment, but a rise in antibiotic resistance could pre-empt an upsurge in rheumatic heart disease, say researchers from the Australian Infectious Diseases Centre at the University of Queensland.
