Scientists show impact of non-hereditary autism gene

A spontaneous genetic disorder has been linked to at least 30% of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cases, according to a study involving more than 2,500 families in which only one member has the condition.

The mutations occur in a child without being present in either parent, says Assistant Professor Ivan Iossifov, a quantitative biologist and first author of a paper about the study.
