See what works before honing the fiscal blade

If reducing health costs remains a major fiscal priority for the government, then we need to turn our minds to where the fiscal blade can best be applied to heal, rather than debilitate, within the health sector. It’s largely a matter of choices.

Primary care reduces downstream costs. Delivered through general practice and models of ‘generalist’ practice, it affords many savings, especially if empowered to work with patients so that they become healthier. There are much higher variable costs attributable to spending a day in hospital.
