Shingles rise prompts vaccination calls

Experts are urging older Australians to get vaccinated against shingles in light of a doubling of presentations in general practice between 2000 and 2010.

EDs have also seen a 2-6% annual rise in herpes zoster presentations, according to infectious diseases specialists Professor Dominic Dwyer and Dr Michael Wehrhahn, of Sydney’s Westmead Hospital.

The increase highlighted the need for over-60s to have the vaccine, Zostavax, which was recommended for inclusion on the National Immunisation Program in 2008,
