Should these patients be prescribed statins?

Older women may be better off without statin therapy because it increases their risk of new-onset diabetes, suggest Australian researchers.  

Taking a statin increases the odds of developing diabetes by 33%, according to the study of more than 8000 women in their 70s and 80s.

One in 20 statin-taking women received treatment for diabetes within 10 years of exposure, from 2003-2013, equating to a number needed to harm of 131 for five years.

Patients prescribed higher doses were more likely to develop diabetes than those on lower doses, suggesting a dose
