Sick prisoners shackled to hospital beds

A woman in labour and a man with terminal motor neurone disease were among prisoners shackled to their hospital beds, a damning Ombudsman’s report into SA’s prison service finds.

The inquiry found prison staff used unnecessary force, denied prisoners dignity and broke the law in not considering in each individual case whether the use of restraints was necessary.
