Smokers don’t quit after heart attack

Almost half of smokers continue smoking after a heart attack, a study from Melbourne has shown.

The review of 1888 patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) by the Monash Intervention Group found that 45% of smokers quit immediately, 10% delayed cessation and 13% quit temporarily after a heart attack but later relapsed.

However, 32% resumed smoking
