Australian food companies should test more frequently, say researchers

At least one in 40 products labelled ‘gluten-free’ have been found to contain gluten, including one pasta, which contains the protein at a level that could be harmful if consumed regularly, an Australian study shows.

When researchers tested 256 of Australia’s most commonly purchased gluten-free manufactured goods, they found nearly 3% failed to comply with the national standard of containing ‘no detectable gluten’.

“While the gluten content per standard food serve was generally low, the 3mg gluten per serve of gluten-free pasta could be harmful to coeliac patients, especially if consumed frequently,” the authors write in the Medical Journal of Australia.

They are calling on manufacturers to test their products more frequently for gluten, which will reduce the risk for people with coeliac disease.
