Specialist costs still putting off patients: survey
Almost one in 12 patients say they are delaying or avoiding seeing medical specialists because of cost, data show.
Survey results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) again show the financial barriers faced by patients needing non-GP specialist care.
Of the 28,000 patients the ABS surveyed, 8.1% said they had delayed seeing a specialist in the past year because of cost factors.
The proportion of patients who said cost factors stopped them seeing a GP had gone down — from 5% in 2014/15 to 4.1% in 2015/16 — possibly reflecting record bulk-billing
