Specialists call for publicly funded bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery should be provided in the public sector for severely obese people because it is cost-effective and targets those who need it most, a study from NSW shows.

Patients lost an average of 40kg after undergoing bariatric surgery, and the $9000 cost of the operation and follow-up was offset within a year by savings from reductions in type 2 diabetes, according to research published in the Medical Journal of Australia on Monday.
