AI has identified two motile spermatozoa amid 2.5 million images, leading to a successful pregnancy despite a man’s azoospermia.

Writing in The Lancet, Columbia University researchers said the man, 39, and his long-term partner had been trying to conceive for 19 years.

He had already undergone extensive testicular sperm extraction procedures and manual sperm searches.

These found sperm on rare occasions, but 11 years of assisted reproductive technology, including 19 oocyte retrievals and trials of intracytoplasmic sperm injection, had yielded only one embryo suitable to transfer, and no pregnancies.
