SSRIs best avoided for kids
Prescribing children antidepressants is best avoided especially at high therapeutic doses, a study finds.
A meta-analysis of antidepressant trials found that children randomised to receive SSRIs had twice the rate of suicidal ideation and behaviour compared to the placebo group.
And the higher the dose the greater the risk of deliberate self harm even in patients up to the age of 24. For older adults the absolute risk of suicidal behaviour was far lower.
