Start breast screening at 40: study

Women in their 40s who have routine screening mammograms are diagnosed at earlier stages with smaller tumours and are less likely to require chemotherapy, a US study finds.

While most research indicates that the benefits of breast cancer screening for women in this age group are not strong enough to promote the practice, the US study published in the American Journal of Roentgenology found that ignoring this group may lead to diagnoses of later stage breast cancers.

The researchers compared two groups aged between 40 and
